Veneers

One of the most effective options available in the treatment of damaged, discolored or misshapen teeth comes in the form of veneers.

Teeth that display a range of characteristics such as chips, cracks, stains, breakage, gaps or irregularity can be both improved and rectified by the relatively simple application of dental veneers.

Veneers are a technique that involves the use of porcelain or composite resin materials which are constructed in a way that is reminiscent of your natural teeth, both in color and feel.

They are composed of a very thin layer of material which is placed on the front of the teeth in question and serve to effectively enhance your mouth for greatly improved cosmetic appeal.

The two forms of veneers are similar in their respective job roles but there are a number of factors that differentiate the two options.

Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are composed of a thin layer of tooth colored porcelain which is attached to the front of the tooth and are very complimentary in terms of their natural tooth-like quality, effectively mimicking the natural texture and translucency of the real teeth.

Porcelain veneers also resist staining, unlike other cosmetic dental bonding materials and are smooth, therefore resisting the permanent staining from cigarette smoking or richly colored foods.

In order to place porcelain veneers, a small amount of enamel is removed before an impression is taken. After this has been completed, a technician moulds the veneer which is then cemented to the tooth. This process can involve a couple of separate dental appointments.

Porcelain veneers are generally more expensive than their composite resin counterparts.

Composite Veneers
Composite resin veneers are a less involved process than the porcelain versions and can often be completed in one visit.

After a small amount of the tooth enamel is prepared, composite materials are placed onto the tooth and reshaped into a natural looking tooth.

In either case, veneers provide an effective and elegant solution to a range of cosmetic dental issues and can serve to improve the health and structure of your smile at the same time, where cracks or spacing can leave room for breeding bacteria and decay.
