Crowns and Bridges

A crown is used when a tooth is decayed, cracked, broken, or has large cavities, possibly resulting from large fillings, tooth decay, aging or grinding of teeth or an improper bite pattern.

A crown acts in a way that covers an entire tooth after it has been thoroughly cleaned and prepared and provides strength, durability and stability to the mouth. It is positioned to ‘cap’ the tooth and is constructed so as to mimic the natural composition and appearance of your teeth.

Often crowns are used in the aftermath of root canal procedures, as they act as an effective protection and stabilizing device.

A bridge is another restorative option that is used in conjunction with crowns to overcome the problems of tooth loss or damage to several teeth.

Teeth on either side of the gap are crowned, and the gap filled with an artificial tooth which is anchored to each crown. This is known as the ‘bridge’ and effectively replaces the lost tooth, restoring proper bite and function, while also protecting the underlying gum.

Crowns and bridges can be created to look natural, being shaped to the original tooth and color, using a variety of materials including porcelain and composite resin.
